Radiator valves and air vents
On a steam system, the small parts on each radiator matter. A stuck air vent can leave a room cold, and a leaking valve can drip on hardwood floors or ceilings below.
Signs to watch for
- Water dripping or steam escaping at the radiator valve
- An air vent that hisses constantly, spits water, or never lets air out
- One radiator stays cold while the rest heat up
- A valve handle that's seized or snapped off
- You want to move, remove or reconnect a radiator
What the visit usually involves
- Checking which radiators heat and how fast
- Replacing air vents and matching vent sizes so rooms heat more evenly
- Repacking or replacing leaking radiator valves
- Checking radiator pitch so condensate drains back
- Disconnecting or reconnecting radiators for painting or floor work
Every system and every technician is different. The technician you're connected with will explain their own process and price before any work starts.
Have this ready when you call
- How many radiators have the problem
- Photos of the valve and vent on the problem radiator
- Whether it's one-pipe (one pipe into the radiator) or two-pipe
Questions
Should a steam radiator valve be partly closed to turn down the heat?
On a one-pipe steam system, the supply valve is generally meant to be fully open or fully closed. A half-open valve can trap water and cause banging and spitting. Air vents are the usual way to balance heat. Ask the technician what fits your system.
Why is one radiator cold?
Common causes are a stuck air vent, a closed valve, or a radiator tilted so water sits in it. On two-pipe systems, a failed steam trap can do it. It's usually a small fix once the cause is found.
