No heat right now

If the boiler quit and the house is getting cold, call. If you can't talk, send the form and mark "Yes, no heat right now" so it gets looked at first. Same-day and after-hours help depend on technician availability and aren't guaranteed.

Signs to watch for

  • The boiler won't start at all
  • It runs, but the radiators stay cold
  • The sight glass is empty or the low-water light is on
  • A breaker or the boiler's service switch keeps tripping
  • Pipes in an unheated part of the building are at risk of freezing

What the visit usually involves

  • A call back to ask what the boiler is doing
  • Simple safe checks you can do while you wait (thermostat, service switch, breaker)
  • A technician visit to find and fix the cause, if one is available
  • A temporary fix to get heat back if parts need to be ordered

Every system and every technician is different. The technician you're connected with will explain their own process and price before any work starts.

Have this ready when you call

  • Your address or ZIP and the best number to reach you
  • Steam or hot water, if you know
  • What you see: lights, error codes, the water level in the sight glass
  • Whether anyone in the home is elderly, very young, or medically vulnerable

Questions

I smell gas. What should I do?

Leave the building right away and call your gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches or try to relight anything. This site can't help with a gas leak.

The sight glass on my steam boiler is empty. Should I add water?

Don't add cold water to a hot steam boiler. Turn the boiler off and let it cool, then call. A steam technician can check the low-water cutoff and find out why the water is low.
